Cyberpunk 2077's upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC will look to convert those who ditched the game after its rocky launch, for instance. Get open worlds right and they can be, genuinely, spectacular forays into the most memorable spaces. Despite not being very good, Arkane's Redfall was an open world swing by Microsoft in the hopes it would cash in on the sandbox-likers. I mean, we've got Bethesda's much anticipated Starfield arriving soon, and we're all hoping it lives up the hype and isn't a stinking sci-fi mess. Yep, open world games are still a big deal in 2023. So, join us as we've put together our list of the 10 best open world games to play in 2023. There are some exceptions to the rule, but we reckon they're justified because some worlds are too special to discount. You know, the sort of games where you're let loose on some open turf, perhaps with an objective, perhaps not, but always with an eye to see what's over yonder. This whole thing is messy and confusing and at some point they're just going to have to get realistic. The best open world games can mean a lot of things, but here we're going with the strongest selection of games set in a sandbox, where the onus is less on survival and more on exploration or questing. The way I see that is a basic as they've announced today (£7-£8), a full single device Game Pass and Online service (£10) and then a multiple device plus streaming option which caters for multiple console / PC owners and those who like to use xCloud (£15). So at some stage they're going to have to get realistic about the cost of this thing and set a compelling pricing structure. If I had to renew right now I would not be paying £15 per month or whatever GPU costs. The removal of Gold may nudge that up further if you can't stack months ahead of a conversion, but my point is they're going to need to set a compelling price that people are willing to pay for at some point. Obviously they know that's too low, hence why they've just adjusted the conversion ratios, but even now they're selling GPU at £4.60 per month. My latest three year renewal last month amounted to around £3 per month, through to mid-2026. Right now they're knowingly allowing people to buy-in for multiple years at low costs. This is a frustrating process to observe because they need to restructure the whole service at some point.
